- Morsi government in Egypt overthrown by military. More unrest in Middle East is not great for the rest of us, but of course the main hope would be for a decent life for the Egyptian people. I'ts very unfortunate that it has come to this.
- And the Oil Drum is closing down for new content. That was where I first started blogging back in 2005. Sad to see it go (though I confess I haven't been a regular reader in a number of years).
Finally, I mentioned the other day that I was using Vienna to read news. It turns out that Vienna was in the background relying on Google Reader in ways that I didn't realize. It totally fell apart and became useless once Google Reader was turned off. Grrr. It may take me a while to have a functioning blog reader set-up again.

FWIW, I read this on http://theoldreader.com/ and it is meeting my needs.
Try feedly instead it works for me although I imported all the reader info before close so it may need a manual import.. Good luck

I changed to feedly.. Highly recommended . Import was auto before reader closed.. Not sure now.

Like many old vets, I learned, long ago, what an ugly mess the US is. Too negative, too gloomy, too doomy, etc have been the accusations for decades. Sorry but I really don't think most Americans give a shit. As long as they get their football, beer, cheap gas and air headed TV, all is well with the world far as their concerned. Those folks who talk, oughta kill em anyway. Foreigners, just worthless people taking up space. Don't believe me, go down to the local bar and listen.
I switched to FeedDemon, but it also shut down. I am trying Feedly, and that seems to be working very well.

It's working pretty great so far, almost all of the same functionality, the only thing I haven't found yet is the trending for when and how many articles I read (which I used to try to force myself to only read when I wasn't supposed to be working-- instant accountability.)
But all of the actual reading functionality is similar, even to the log-in web-based nature, which I appreciate.
I am retroactively fortunate in having had a problem with Google Reader some time ago, migrated to Vienna, and have happily used it now for some time.
I haven't, to my knowledge, experienced any problem this month after Reader shut down. Will you be more specific about the problem you experienced? I'd like to know if my configuration has the same problem.

I wasn't thrilled with the destruction of Google Reader either - I've moved over to a digg.com reader and it seems to be pretty good, so far. Conveniently, it was able to import all of the Google Reader data so my feeds transferred seamlessly.
Feedly is working great
hi. i tried out a bunch of rss readers. the dependency on google was an issue for many. right now i am using both feedly and digg's new reader. feedly is ok but no great if you read a gajillion blogs. digg is brand new - they began to make it when google announced it was closing. i saw somewhere that you have til july 14 to do "google take out" of you feeds. i know digg will import them and i am not positive on feedly but there should be a way. both of those readers are independent of google. thank you for your nice blog and i hope that helps.
My guess is that in a reasonably short time Egypt has an Islamic government.
I just think that the military can't stop it forever. They might try, but if they pick that fight they will probably inevitably lose. Probably start a civil war with about half the military going over to the other side.

Libertarians have been making these points since I was in college in the late 70's... for nearly 40 years the Left has painted Libertarians as "further to the Right" than the looney Right.

I have been resigned to Uncle Sam keeping track of ALL my communications (including the dead tree variety) ever since I was a commissioned officer in the Armed Forces. That does not colour my judgement of what is moral and ethical, nor my willingness to express it.
I exported my Reader config and loaded it into Feedly and i can hardly tell the difference to be honest - works great...
