Still, we may posit that Middle eastern oil, especially in the stable countries, is much less expensive to produce than elsewhere. It doesn't really matter much though, since the price is set by the marginal barrel to produce. It's also the case that Saudi Arabia as a whole is now geared to high oil prices and cannot accept much less than $100 without running a deficit.Stuart Stanifordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07182839827506265860noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5235419263414453422.post-47026996069866681132013-12-28T09:42:07.882-08:002013-12-28T09:42:07.882-08:00Lars - I saw the EIA report but haven't studie...Lars - I saw the EIA report but haven't studied it. I haven't yet found any convincing way of assessing how big the tight oil might get. The URR is a product of a very big number (the resource in place) by a very small number (the recovery rate) and such calculations are inherently rather uncertain.Stuart Stanifordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07182839827506265860noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5235419263414453422.post-66226218975165915832013-12-28T08:56:23.910-08:002013-12-28T08:56:23.910-08:00Stuart: I have read that Middle East oil is produc...Stuart: I have read that Middle East oil is produced for less than$5 per barrel. The cost of deepwater oil, especially the new North Slope plays, must be much more than that. What is the cost to produce the new North Slope oil? What is the economic rationale for very expensive new oil in the face of the cheap oil now being produced? Too many disruptions, regardless if they were involved or not, and their investments lost money.

An analysis of different scenarios involving the transition from fossil fuels to alternative energy ought to be possible, and informative, but I haven't seen any.
